Hitlers fortifications had fallen: Hitlers fortifications had fallen out of favour for two decades, but the Russian armys use of similar defences (known as the Great Wall) at the Battle of Stalingrad against Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union caught Hitlers eye. He had viewed this battle as a game, and sent away plans for a single massive fortress in the Baltic Sea called barbed wire (the code name for the project that would become the Atlantic Wall).
